A growing number of jurisdictions are restricting flavours in tobacco and vaping products in an effort to reduce initiation among young people. The types of flavour restrictions vary across jurisdictions: in some cases flavours are only restricted in tobacco products or e-cigarettes, in other cases restrictions apply to both. Restrictions also vary in the types of flavours that are prohibited. For example, menthol is included among prohibited flavours in some policies and exempted in others.
Our research has examined public support for flavour restrictions, the impact of tobacco and vaping flavour policies among youth and adults, and ways in which tobacco and vaping companies alter their products in response to flavour restrictions.
