US-Canada labelling study
In December 2015, the United States will become the first country to require nutritional labelling on menus at the federal level. Chain restaurants and food service outlets with more than 20 outlets will be required to post the calorie content of menu items next to the price. We are conducting a quasi-experimental study to evaluate the impact of the new regulations on consumer behaviour. We are using population-based phone survey and exit interviews with patrons from “quick services” and “full service” restaurants before and after the implementation of the new regulations. The study will also be an opportunity to evaluate voluntary policy measures that have been widely implemented in the Canadian province of British Columbia and have since been expanded to other provinces by leading restaurant chains in Canada.
